I. Introduction and Review
A. We are studying the Book of Genesis, verse by verse
B. The Making of a Man - Adam (Genesis 2:7)
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” - Genesis 2:7
- He was incomplete
- He needed help - not as a cripple, but as someone designed with needs that only a wife could supply
- It is built into us to need some things to be complete: like a family! And it starts with a man having a wife
C. The Design and Purpose of a Wife (Genesis 2:18)
- God did not just design a woman, and not even just a wife, but a help!
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” - Genesis 2:18
- We talked last week about HOW a wife can help her husband
- If you are married, THAT is what your man needs:
- Not an arguer, or a competitor. Not a brawler, a nag.
- He needs a helper, a blesser, an encourager, a lover
- Someone who fits him like a glove (not like sandpaper)
D. The Bible begins and ends with a marriage
- Did you know that the Bible begins and ends with a marriage?
- Here in Genesis 2, we watch the first wedding…
- Then, all the way at the end of the Bible, in Revelation 19:6-9, we read about the best wedding, in heaven
“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.” - Revelation 19:7
II. Message
A. “I Will Make…” (Genesis 2:18)
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” - Genesis 2:18
- Again, God did not say, He was going to make a WIFE, but a HELP
- Some facts about the first woman…
a. She was God-designed, and built by God
- Adam did not design her… God did
- Adam is asleep through the entire process!
- Leave the designing of the perfect woman to GOD, not to Hollywood!
- And NOT to your dreams!
b. She was designed and built for the man - for her husband
“For Adam was first formed, then Eve.” - 1 Timothy 2:13
“For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.” - 1 Corinthians 11:8,9
c. She was designed to be a WOMAN
- Womanhood is NOT a costume. A man can’t put on a dress and lipstick then magically become a woman.
- She is genetically different than a man - two X chromosomes
- She is hormonally different than a man
- She is shaped different than a man
- She is reproductively different than a man
B. Adam Needs to Appreciate What God is Giving Him (Genesis 2:19,20)
“And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.” - Genesis 2:19,20
-
God wanted Adam to understand and appreciate what a gift a wife really is!
-
A Parade of Life - God brought all the animals to Adam to name
-
This was a teaching moment, showing Adam his own need as well as God’s will and design for him
- God wanted Adam to learn to Trust in the Lord
- To Love God first
- To use his head, not just his heart
-
What Adam needed to learn:
- Nothing this world HAS is what a man needs!
- Learn to wait on God
- Learn that God is able to provide the impossible
- That God’s will and timing is perfect
C. A Deep Sleep (Genesis 2:21)
“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof.” - Genesis 2:21
- God put Adam to sleep - he had no part in designing his wife
- God took something from Adam to build Eve
- A wife is not made from the man’s head to rule over him
- Nor from his feet to be trampled by him
- But from his side - to be his equal, his companion
III. Conclusion
A. Every woman is designed by God
B. Marriage is God’s design from the beginning
C. A wife is meant to be a help - not a competitor
D. God knows what you need better than you do
E. Trust God with your life and your future
