I. Review (Genesis 6:13-16,22)
A. It was the end of the world (Genesis 6:13)
- The earth had been around about 1,500 years from Adam and Eve, through ten generations to Noah
“And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” - Genesis 6:13
B. Why?
-
“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” - Genesis 6:5,6
-
“The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.” - Genesis 6:11,12
-
Through those 1,500 years, mankind had turned more and more violent as they walked further and further away from their Creator!
-
The imaginations and aspirations of people were only evil
-
That is the condition of human nature - when it is allowed to “run its course”
-
The world was about to destroy itself!
-
And the devil would have been delighted - he loves trying to make everything God makes into a failure!
-
But God intervened!
C. Make a big box called an ark (Genesis 6:14-16)
-
“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.” - Genesis 6:14-16
-
A massive floating box, with three floors, and room to spare!
-
Big enough for Noah and his family of 8, as well as a collection of all the kinds of animals in the world
D. And Noah believed God, and obeyed Him
-
Do you know what Noah did? He believed God!
-
“Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.” - Genesis 6:22
-
“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.” - Hebrews 11:7
II. Message
A. The Promises of the Ark (Genesis 6:17-7:8)
1. The Promise of a New Covenant
- The old world was about to die
“And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.” - Genesis 6:17
- God has a new world and new covenant for mankind
“But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.” - Genesis 6:18
-
Just know judgment must fall upon sin and sinners
-
A new covenant was for those who believed God - not just believe IN God, but trusted Him and obeyed Him!
-
Meaning of a covenant:
- To enter into a formal agreement; to bind one’s self by contract, with consequences if the agreement is broken
- God makes agreements with mankind - called covenants
- It will be explained in chapter 9
-
We make covenants:
- Marriage is a formal agreement between a man and a woman, bound by oath to stay with each other and for only each other until death
- Adoption is another covenant agreement
- Guardianships - you agree to care for someone unable to care for themselves
- Employment contracts - mutual obligations between employer and employee
- Church memberships are covenant agreements
-
We are enjoying a new covenant right now!
- Jesus called it the New Testament!
- All the wrath of God was poured out on HIM, and allowed US to go free!
2. The Promise of Salvation - Imputed Righteousness First
- The ark could not save a sinner’s soul - Noah had to be made righteous first!
“And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.” - Genesis 7:1
- God saw Noah’s heart - saw righteousness in him
III. Conclusion
A. The Ark was God’s provision for salvation
B. But you had to get IN the Ark to be saved
C. Jesus is our Ark today - have you entered in?
D. Faith requires action - believe AND obey
