I. Background and Review (Hebrews 11:7)
A. The world had been left to itself since Genesis chapter 3
- A lot has happened since the Garden of Eden
- 1,650 years have passed
- Ever since Adam and Eve had decided to live according to their own conscience, and by their own rules, God stepped back and just let them and their children follow their heart… all the way to ruin!
- And the world has collapsed - NOT gotten better and better
“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.” - Genesis 6:5-7
-
“God saw…” God sees not just actions, but attitudes, AND the heart of men and women
- God sees reality - not what we show off on the outside, but what we really are!
“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7
-
“The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.” - Genesis 6:11,12
-
God is describing Great wickedness
- It did not start this way, but it was surely ending that way!
- Corrupt - we know what this world means with politicians - they were RUINED
- Wicked to the core - in their imaginations and heart and emotions and feelings
- Society was FILLED with violence
- Wicked, dark, demonic, abusive, hateful, violent thoughts filled their hearts and minds, and then filled their homes and streets and cities!
- Vegetarians were killing each other
- Animals began to kill and eat each other
- Violence was the way of life - brutal, angry, hateful, fighting, killing
- Cain had started something that only expanded and grew out of control!
-
The world fell apart
- Nothing is improving, except technology - but man’s hearts are only becoming more and more darker
- A complete collapse of every society, and every home, in every corner of the world!
- Mankind had invited and welcomed demonic influences and demons into their THOUGHTS, and into their BEDROOMS!
- By-the-way, As it was in the days of Noah, it continues to happen today doesn’t it?
-
Men unrestrained by higher laws than themselves become only more and more wicked!
- Look at the “wild west” in America - where there was no sheriff and no preacher, only thievery, abuses and ruin controlled every western town!
- Because, Men left alone, only (without law or expectations) become wicked
- More than education, and money, and health, you need God!
B. We Now Learn of Noah (Genesis 6)
-
By the end of chapter 5 there have been 10 generations of mankind from Adam to Noah and his 3 sons
-
“And he [LAMECH] called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.” - Genesis 5:29
-
“And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.” - Genesis 5:32
-
Noah is a very important man in the Bible - 4 chapters devoted to him and his sons
- Noah’s story runs through the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth chapters of Genesis.
- His name means Comfort, Hope, Continuing On in a world about to die
- And Noah has a great testimony…
“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.” - Genesis 6:8-10
-
Noah was godly, and lived differently than the culture around him - a world gone crazy
- He experienced the grace of God instead of God’s judgment
