I. Introduction
A. Noah and his Ark is one of the most widely known events in the history of mankind.
B. Unfortunately, it is often believed to be a mere fairytale
- Most people will often confidently dismiss the account of Noah’s Ark by simply stating, there’s no way Noah could have fit all the animals on the earth.
- And yet when you ask them how many animals were needed to go on board or if they know how big the Ark was, they will admit absolute ignorance.
- But then still say there’s no way Noah could have done it, which shows that they probably have some misconception about Noah’s Ark and haven’t thought through it deeply at all.
C. Truth is often stranger than fiction
- This was not a bedtime children’s story describing A FEW animals on a boat
- But the wiping out of the entire human race except for eight people is part of history recorded across all cultures.
- For Bible believing Christians, the Bible is the true history book of the universe
- And we are studying through the first Book in the Bible, the Book of Genesis
D. Genesis chapters 6-9 are about Noah and God’s judgment on a world gone mad!
- God tells Noah to build a big storm-worthy box called an Ark.
- Because judgment was coming. The righteous judgment of God
- Something that very few churches talk about anymore!
- Yet, the love of God is not the starting place for wisdom - the fear of God is!
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” - Proverbs 1:7
II. Background
A. A Worldwide Flood was Coming
-
Not a local flood, but every square inch of the world was going to experience DEEP floodwaters covering all land and drowning out every living thing that breathed!
-
Everyone and everything that breathed was going to die
“And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” - Genesis 6:7,8
“And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.” - Genesis 6:17
“For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.” - Genesis 7:4
“And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.” - Genesis 7:21-23
-
Not because God is mean or cruel or evil
-
But because man is accountable to God! We forget this
-
And because God is holy and righteous, and He is the judge
“For he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.” - Psalm 98:9
B. The Flood is a Foundational Part of the Word of God
-
Genesis is THE foundation of EVERYTHING in the Bible - it is not fluff
-
All Scripture is God-Inspired!
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures [ALL OF IT], which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture [FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION] is given by inspiration of God [BY THE VERY BREATH OF GOD], and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” - 2 Timothy 3:15-17
-
The Flood is part of a whole story - you cannot just pick and choose what you read and what you believe in this Book!
-
I am a Bible believer. That means I believe every word was inspired by God and is true and is profitable to believe and live by!
-
I believe what Jesus believed
- Jesus says all that we are reading is true. Jesus pointed to all those Genesis events as real, actual, having happened, and vital to know and believe to know the character of God and the depravity of mankind!
“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” - Matthew 24:37-39
- Jesus describes life before the flood like He knew!
-
The Apostle Peter believed Noah’s flood was an actual event and pointed to it as a reason to be very afraid TODAY!
“For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly.” - 2 Peter 2:4-6
III. Conclusion
A. Noah’s Ark is real history, not fiction
B. God judges sin - He did then and He will again
C. But God also provides a way of escape for those who believe
D. Jesus is our Ark of salvation today
