Sin in the Garden

Sunday 6 April 2025 Pastor Craig Ledbetter Genesis 3:1-21

I. Introduction and Review (2 Corinthians 2:11)

A. We are studying the Book of Genesis, verse by verse

B. Review of what we’ve learned

  1. The creation of the universe in six days
  2. The formation of Adam and Eve
  3. The perfect Garden of Eden
  4. The first marriage

C. Last week we saw Satan approaching Eve

  1. The subtle serpent began questioning God’s Word
  2. Eve added to God’s command
  3. Satan boldly denied God’s warning about death

II. Message

A. Satan’s Strategy Against Eve

  1. He questioned God’s Word - “Yea, hath God said?”
  2. He denied God’s warning - “Ye shall not surely die”
  3. He made God seem restrictive - suggesting God was withholding something good
  4. He promised godhood - “Ye shall be as gods”

B. Eve’s Downfall (Genesis 3:6)

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” - Genesis 3:6

  1. She SAW - the lust of the eyes
  2. It was good for FOOD - the lust of the flesh
  3. Desired to make one WISE - the pride of life

C. Adam’s Willful Sin

  1. Adam was not deceived like Eve was
  2. He deliberately chose to disobey God
  3. He chose his wife over his Creator

D. The Immediate Consequences

  1. Their eyes were opened - not to become gods, but to see their nakedness
  2. They tried to cover themselves - their own works
  3. They hid from God - guilt and shame
  4. They blamed others - Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the serpent

E. God’s Response

  1. God came seeking them - “Where art thou?”
  2. God confronted their sin
  3. God pronounced judgment
  4. God provided covering through blood sacrifice

III. Conclusion

A. Satan’s devices haven’t changed

“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” - 2 Corinthians 2:11

B. Sin always promises more than it delivers

C. Our attempts to cover sin are futile

D. Only God can provide the covering we need

E. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
