I. Introduction and Review (Exodus 20:9,11; Hebrews 11:3)
A. The first chapter of Genesis is one of the most God-centred chapters in the Bible
- God is mentioned by name THIRTY-TWO TIMES in thirty-one verses
- From the very first page of Scripture the Holy Spirit brings us into the presence of God and keeps us there
- No wonder Satan hates this chapter!
- No wonder he has worked so hard to discredit it in the minds of men
- To make people laugh at what He has said
B. Can God be trusted?
- The Bible says ALL Scripture was inspired by GOD (2 Timothy 3:16)
- If God cannot be trusted to be telling the truth when He tells of creation, how can He be trusted when He tells of anything?
- If what He says about earth in Genesis 1 can be questioned, then what He says about heaven in Revelation 22 can be questioned
- If God cannot be trusted in Genesis 1, how can He be trusted in John 3:16?
C. Genesis 1 is a statement of origins, and science knows nothing of origins
- Science is concerned with HOW things work now and cannot say how things began
- Science can measure the laws that NOW govern the universe, but those laws do not explain how the whole process was started
- Only Someone who was THERE at the beginning can tell us how everything started
- And according to Genesis 1:1, God was there
D. Genesis Chapter 1 introduces us to Almighty God! (Isaiah 46:9,10)
“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me…” - Isaiah 46:9
E. God says everything was created in just Six Days (Exodus 20:9,11)
“Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work…” - Exodus 20:9
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” - Exodus 20:11
F. And as Bible believing Christians, we just believe it (Hebrews 11:3)
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” - Hebrews 11:3
II. Review from Last Sunday
A. We learned about The Trinity in Creation (Genesis 1:1-3)
B. What happened on Day One - The Creation of Light (Genesis 1:3-5)
III. Message (Genesis 1:6-25)
A. Day Two - The Firmament (Genesis 1:6-8)
“And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.” - Genesis 1:6-8
-
What did God Do on Day Two?
- God reached into the depths of the waters on the earth and inserted a layer between them - a firmament
- He inserted a layer of AIR between two layers of water, separating them
- Water above us, huh? Yep!
- At one time, there was a thick layer of water way above us - a canopy
-
A firmament is a thing - the gap between those waters was not empty
- Air is a firmament - you know air is there - even though it is invisible
- Air is not empty. It is a thing - it has a firmness to it
- It is not some “dome” like flat earthers believe
- It is the sky above us - filled with air
-
Space is also ‘a thing’
- Beyond the atmosphere, all that empty space extending all the way to the edge of the universe is firmament as well
- Science calls it “the fabric of space-time itself!”
-
God called the firmament of air ‘Heaven’
- The word heaven simply means “the above”, “the sky”
- There are three heavens described in Scripture:
- The 1st heaven is our atmosphere - birds fly in the 1st heaven (Genesis 1:20)
- The 2nd heaven is outer space - that’s where stars and the sun and moon are (Genesis 1:14,15)
- The 3rd heaven which has always been there and this is where God dwells
B. Day Three - Dry Land and Vegetation (Genesis 1:9-13)
- God commands the waters to gather together
- Dry land appears - the continents
- God creates all plant life - grass, herbs, trees
- Each producing seed “after his kind”
C. Day Four - Sun, Moon, and Stars (Genesis 1:14-19)
- God creates the sun, moon, and stars
- They are for signs, seasons, days, and years
- The sun rules the day, the moon rules the night
- God made the stars also - all the billions of galaxies!
D. Day Five - Sea and Air Life (Genesis 1:20-23)
- God creates all sea creatures
- God creates all birds and flying creatures
- God blesses them to be fruitful and multiply
- Each reproducing “after their kind”
E. Day Six Begins - Land Animals (Genesis 1:24-25)
- God creates cattle, creeping things, and beasts of the earth
- Including dinosaurs!
- Each “after his kind”
IV. Conclusion
A. God created in an orderly fashion - from the simple to the complex
B. Each creation was “good” in God’s eyes
C. Everything reproduces “after its kind” - no evolution across kinds
D. The universe is young - about 6,000 years old, not billions
E. Our God is the Creator of all things - and nothing is too hard for Him!
