I. Introduction (Luke 22:15)
“And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.” - Luke 22:15
A. Our Lord Jesus looked forward to a special Passover meal
This Passover was the blueprint for what was about to happen on the cross.
B. Every born-again Christian ought to look forward to this opportunity
To refresh their memory of what Jesus did for their forgiveness and salvation!
C. Just like Israel constantly remembered their First Passover
- Too often people have been confused and misinformed about this event
- They have no idea about the Passover, nor about Jesus being the final Lamb of God
- The Passover is the oldest continuously observed feast in existence - celebrated by Jews for almost 3,500 years
- No other feast foreshadows our redemption in Jesus in such beautiful detail
- The Lord’s Supper reminds us that Christianity had a high price tag
II. Background
A. The Judgment of the First Passover (Exodus 12:1-14)
-
It all happened 3,400 years ago, in Egypt
-
Real slavery - unbreakable bondage
- For 430 years, the entire nation of Israel lived as slaves in Egypt
- Enslaved by Pharaoh’s unbreakable grip
- But that unbreakable grip was one day broken!
- Not by an army, but by Almighty God - THEIR God, the God of Israel!
-
The Tenth Plague (Exodus 11,12)
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence.” - Exodus 11:1
“And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant.” - Exodus 11:5
B. The Passover Lamb
- God provided a way of escape
- A lamb without blemish was to be slain
- The blood was to be applied to the doorposts
- When God saw the blood, He would pass over that house
C. Jesus: Our Passover Lamb
“For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.” - 1 Corinthians 5:7
III. The Lord’s Supper
A. The Bread - His Body Broken
- Jesus took bread and blessed it
- “This is my body which is broken for you”
- We remember His physical suffering for us
B. The Cup - His Blood Shed
- The cup represents His blood
- The New Covenant in His blood
- Shed for the remission of sins
C. “Do This in Remembrance of Me”
- Not a sacrament that saves
- But a memorial that reminds
- Until He comes again
IV. Conclusion
A. The Passover points to Christ
B. The Lord’s Supper helps us remember
C. Have you applied the blood of the Lamb to your life?
D. Jesus is the better Passover - the final, perfect sacrifice
